The Formula, and What Your Result Means
The limb symmetry index is calculated as LSI = (lower value / higher value) x 100, the convention commonly used in the sports medicine literature. Dividing the lower-performing side by the higher-performing side means the result is always 100 percent or less, regardless of which side is stronger. Asymmetry percentage is simply 100 minus the LSI.
Worked example: an athlete jumps 38 cm on the left leg and 42 cm on the right. LSI = (38 / 42) x 100 = 90.5 percent, so the asymmetry is 9.5 percent.
An LSI of 90 percent or higher is a benchmark commonly used in the sports medicine and return-to-play literature.[1] No single cutoff applies to every athlete, test, or sport: some side-to-side difference is normal, dominant limbs often test higher, and the same athlete can show different asymmetry on different tests.
