Athlete Monitoring: What to Track Over a Season

Athlete monitoring is the systematic collection of the same measurements over time so that change becomes visible: a baseline at the start of the season, regular retests through it, and trend views that separate real adaptation from day-to-day noise. Without monitoring, a coach sees a series of disconnected snapshots. With it, they see a trajectory, which is the only thing long-term athletic development can actually be judged by.

Start with a baseline

Everything in monitoring is relative, so the first job of a season is establishing what "normal" looks like for each athlete. A preseason baseline should capture, at minimum:

  • Movement quality on a small set of standard tasks: a squat pattern, a single-leg task, a jump-and-land. Measured in 3D, these yield joint angles and ranges you can compare against all season.
  • Output measures such as jump performance, which are cheap to retest and sensitive to both training adaptation and fatigue.
  • Left-right comparison on the single-leg and landing tasks, because asymmetry is one of the most actionable things monitoring can surface.

The baseline matters most on the athlete's worst day. When something changes mid-season, a knock, a growth spurt, an unexplained dip in performance, the baseline is the reference that tells you how far from normal the athlete has drifted and, later, how close to normal they have returned. This is the same logic behind the limb symmetry index (LSI), the standard convention in rehabilitation literature of expressing one limb's performance as a percentage of the other's: it only works if you know what symmetry looked like for that athlete to begin with.

Choose few things, measure them the same way

The most common monitoring failure is not measuring too little. It is measuring too much, inconsistently, and acting on none of it. A monitoring system earns its keep through repetition: the same tasks, captured the same way, at a regular cadence. A workable season rhythm for most programs looks like a full assessment at preseason, brief retests at sensible intervals through the competitive calendar, and an end-of-season assessment that becomes next year's starting reference.

A useful filter for every metric: what decision would this number change? If a movement retest shows an athlete's landing asymmetry widening across a month, that changes their training emphasis this week. If a metric would not change any decision, it is a distraction with a dashboard.

Consistency of method is what makes this possible, and it is where measurement technology has changed the equation. Read trends, not points

A single measurement is weather. A trend is climate. Day-to-day scores wobble for reasons that have nothing to do with development: sleep, soreness, a hard practice the day before. The discipline of monitoring is refusing to overreact to any single data point and instead asking three questions of the trend view:

  1. Direction: is the athlete's movement quality improving, holding, or degrading across weeks?
  2. Rate: is a change gradual, which usually reflects training and growth, or abrupt, which deserves a closer look?
  3. Divergence: is one metric moving against the others, or one limb moving against the other?

Asymmetry deserves its own trend line. A left-right difference that is stable may simply be that athlete's normal; sport itself is asymmetric, and a pitcher or a striker will never be a mirror image. What matters is change: an asymmetry that widens over successive retests is a flag worth investigating with the performance and medical staff, and an asymmetry that narrows through a return-to-play progression is exactly the objective evidence those decisions want. Monitoring does not make those calls; it makes them informed.

Monitoring is where long-term athletic development stops being a philosophy and becomes a practice.
