Movement competency is the ability to perform fundamental movement patterns, squatting, hinging, lunging, pushing, pulling, landing, and sprinting, with control through a full range of motion. It is the technical foundation of athletic development: the thing that determines whether adding load, speed, or volume will build an athlete up or grind them down. In the language of long-term athletic development, competency is the license to train harder.
Pattern before load, load before speed
Strength and conditioning has a long-standing progression logic, often summarized as: own the pattern, then load the pattern, then speed up the pattern. The reasoning is mechanical. Load amplifies whatever movement strategy an athlete already has. An athlete who squats with collapsing knees at bodyweight will squat with collapsing knees under a barbell, only now with more force running through the same compromised positions. Training volume works the same way: thousands of repetitions of a poor pattern do not average out, they accumulate.
This is why movement competency sits early in every serious development framework, from Balyi's LTAD stages to the physical literacy movement. The FUNdamentals and Learn to Train stages are, at their core, competency stages: build a broad vocabulary of well-controlled movement while the nervous system is most adaptable, so that later loading has something solid to act on.
Competency is also not a one-time checkbox. Growth changes it. During the adolescent growth spurt, limb lengths change faster than motor control adapts, and patterns that were clean at 12 can degrade at 14 through no fault of the athlete or the coach. Competency has to be rechecked as the body changes, which is an argument for measuring it regularly rather than screening once and moving on.
What competency actually looks like
A useful way to think about competency is in three layers:
- Range: can the athlete reach the positions the pattern requires? A full-depth squat needs ankle, knee, and hip range that not every athlete has on day one.
- Control: can they own those positions? Reaching depth with a rounded spine or a collapsing arch is range without control.
- Symmetry: do the left and right sides do roughly the same work? Meaningful side-to-side differences in how an athlete squats, lands, or decelerates are among the most actionable findings a movement assessment can produce.
Tasks like the overhead squat, single-leg squat, and jump-and-land variations are popular assessment choices precisely because they expose all three layers at once.
How it is assessed, then and now
For decades, movement assessment meant one of two things: a coach's eye, or a lab. The eye test is fast but subjective, and research on observational screening has long noted that two qualified observers can score the same movement differently. Lab-grade optical motion capture is the scientific gold standard, but a marker-based system with a capture volume and a technician was never going to screen a 40-athlete roster on a Tuesday.
Markerless 3D biomechanics closes that gap. A camera-based system measures the actual joint angles of a movement, hip flexion, knee valgus, trunk lean, side by side for left and right, and does it from hardware a coach already carries. The practical shift is that competency stops being an opinion and becomes a number with a date on it. "His squat looks better" becomes "his peak hip flexion improved and his left-right difference narrowed since March." That is a statement a coach, an athlete, and a parent can all agree on, and it travels cleanly between the weight room, the training room, and the clinic.
